The original F87 M2 (2016–18) ran the N55 single-turbo six, the same family used elsewhere in BMW's lineup, with a known tendency for the valve cover and oil separator diaphragm to crack and leak as it ages. The M2 Competition (2019–21) switched to the S55 twin-turbo six shared with the F80 M3 and F82 M4, and it carries that engine's well-documented rod-bearing wear – ask for service records showing a shop checked the bottom end, since a failure there is expensive at this power level. The current G87 (2023+) runs the newer S58, which has held up well so far but still uses the same plastic coolant hard lines that crack on other late BMW turbo sixes. Unlike the M3 and M4, BMW has never offered the M2 with all-wheel drive, so every one of these is rear-drive only, and most came with a manual gearbox – both details worth confirming against the listing before you commit.
