Anything through the E46 rides a naturally aspirated six or four, where cooling-system plastic and worn subframe bushings are the usual age-related finds; from the E90 onward, turbo fours and sixes bring their own timing-chain and water-pump quirks, and each has its own known weak point worth researching before you bid. If you already know which car you want, the individual model hubs go deeper: the 328i and 330i cover the volume six-cylinder and turbo-four years, the 335i picks up the turbocharged performance sixes, the 340i is the newest naming, and the M3 covers the four factory performance generations. Whatever the year, treat a hard front hit on any of these unibody cars as a likely write-off rather than a repair, and don't take the title brand at face value without checking it against the damage photos.
