The 228i badge actually covers two different cars, so read the listing before you assume anything about the drivetrain. Early on it was the turbo-four coupe and convertible built on BMW's rear-wheel-drive 2 Series platform; later, BMW reused the name for the four-door 228i xDrive Gran Coupe, built on the brand's front-wheel-drive architecture shared with the 1 Series and X1. Front End is the top damage at 62%. Across the make a recent BMW sold for a median winning bid near $2,500 before fees, most between $1,200 and $6,200. Most of these stay in the US, picked up locally or shipped in-country.
On the original rear-wheel-drive coupe and convertible, the N20 turbo four is the one to know – its timing chain sits at the back of the engine against the transmission, and worn guides there are a well-documented weak point, so ask for chain-service history on any high-mile car. The plastic water pump and thermostat housing from this era also crack with age and are worth a look regardless of mileage. On the newer Gran Coupe, the drivetrain and structure carry over from front-wheel-drive BMW crossovers rather than the coupe, so don't assume parts or repair costs match between the two – confirm the body style and drivetrain layout in the listing before you price the repair.
Buying is quick: register free – no dealer license – set a maximum bid and the system bids up to that cap for you, or take a lot at its Buy Now price. Win it, pay the invoice plus fees, then pick up, ship or export.
Note: ACV and damage data come from the original auction listing. Always check the condition and title yourself before you bid.

FAQ
FAQ What condition are these 228is in?
About 37 lots, 78% on a salvage title and the rest clean or rebuilt. Front End leads at 62%, and the pool mixes the original coupe and convertible with the newer four-door Gran Coupe.
Is a salvage 228i worth buying?
Often, but confirm which car you're actually looking at first – the two generations don't share parts. BMW-wide, a recent car sold for a median winning bid near $2,500 before fees, most between $1,200 and $6,200 – a clean-title 228i usually prices inside that band.
What should I check before bidding?
On the coupe or convertible, ask about timing-chain service on the N20 and check the water pump and thermostat housing for cracks. On the Gran Coupe, verify the drivetrain layout in the listing, since it's built on a different platform entirely.
Can I insure and register a salvage 228i?
Not while it's salvage-titled. You register and insure it only after it's rebuilt and passes a state inspection; once re-titled rebuilt, most insurers will write it, just not the company that totaled it. Check with your insurer before you bid.
How does the auction work?
Register free, no dealer license needed. Set a maximum bid and the system bids for you up to that cap, or take a lot at its Buy Now price. Win it, pay the invoice plus fees, then pick up, ship or export.
How do I check a 228i's history before bidding?
Every lot lists the VIN, damage type and title brand. Run the VIN through a vehicle-history report, and confirm the body style and drivetrain match what the listing claims.
What are good alternatives to the 228i?
Cross-shop the Audi A3 if you want the Gran Coupe's front-wheel-drive layout, or the Infiniti Q60 for a rear-wheel-drive coupe alternative.
