Cars built through 2016 run BMW's N55 single-turbo inline-six, an engine mostly known for two recurring items: the high-pressure fuel pump, which BMW has replaced under warranty on plenty of examples but still fails on others, and the oil filter housing gasket, which seeps oil down the front of the engine as it ages. Rough idle on a cold start often traces back to a tired VANOS solenoid rather than anything serious. The 2017-and-later facelift switched to the newer B58 inline-six, which has proven noticeably more durable, though a valve cover gasket leak is still the item to check first. Either engine, look at the adaptive suspension and self-leveling components on a hard hit, since replacing them isn't cheap. If the shell's too far gone, the non-repairable 640i lots still move for the drivetrain and interior.
