The 328d was BMW's diesel answer to the 328i, sold as both a sedan and a Sports Wagon on the F30-generation 3 Series, and it's a thinner-volume lot at auction than the gas car. The 328d runs BMW's N47 four-cylinder diesel, and its best-known weak point is the timing chain, which sits at the back of the engine against the firewall rather than up front – so a worn chain or guide means pulling the engine or transmission to fix it, not a quick front-of-engine job. Ask specifically about chain service history and listen for rattling on cold start before you bid. Like other BMW diesels, the 328d also leans on an EGR valve and a diesel particulate filter to meet emissions rules, and both clog or fail over time, so recent service records on each are worth chasing down. On the wagon body, check the rear hatch struts and cargo area separately from the usual collision points, since that's extra hardware the sedan doesn't carry. When a lot's too far gone to save, a clean-title 328d at least gives you a baseline for comparing repair cost against value.
