On any automatic lot, treat it as failed until proven otherwise; a manual sidesteps the whole problem. Engines are simpler news: the 1.6 four is durable, the little 1.0 EcoBoost is peppy but watch coolant and the timing belt, and the ST's 1.6 turbo is the fun one worth chasing if the body's straight. There's no separate frame – it's a unibody, so a hard front hit can tweak the shell past economical repair, and a totaled shell with a good drivetrain is really a parts or non-repairable play, not a rebuild.
