The Freestyle was Ford's first crack at a three-row car-based crossover, built only from 2005 to 2007 before it was reworked and renamed the Taurus X, so the auction pool is small and every one is a twenty-year-old car by now. Practically none have sold here in the last two years – far too few to set a model price on – so treat the roughly $3,000 median across Ford as a whole as a loose ceiling, not a Freestyle figure; in reality these old crossovers change hands for a lot less. Front-end hits are the usual damage, panels and glass are cheap, and the buyers chasing them are mostly after a cheap seven-seat runabout or a parts donor rather than a flip.
One part decides everything on a Freestyle: the transmission. Every one of them uses a CVT – a continuously variable automatic that's the known weak point on this car, expensive to fix and hard to find a shop that'll touch it. A slipping, shuddering or limp-mode CVT is usually the reason the car is here at all, and a replacement can cost more than the car is worth, so drive it or walk the seller through it before you commit. The engine is the one Ford motor across the range – the 3.0 Duratec V6 – modest on power for a heavy three-row and generally reliable, which is small comfort when the gearbox behind it isn't. It's a unibody with no ladder frame, so a hard front hit loads the strut towers and core support and a folded shell pulls straight far less easily than a truck. Order an AWD one and you inherit the power-transfer unit, which fails when it's been neglected – same story as the Explorer, so listen for whine and look for leaks. When the CVT is toast the smart play is parts-only: pull the 3.0 and the good panels and let the shell go.
