After that, the engine: the 3.8 Essex V6 is the one to watch, with a long head-gasket history, so look for coolant loss and overheating; the smaller 3.0 Vulcan is less powerful but the calmer motor. It's a unibody, not a framed truck, so a hard front-end hit can tweak the structure – check that the front rails and radiator support line up. General rust matters too, since these rot through rockers, subframes and brake lines up north. If it's too far gone, a Windstar is worth more as clean-title running gear and interior parts than as a driver – the parts sell, even if the van doesn't.
