The Five Hundred was Ford's full-size sedan for just three model years, 2005 through 2007, before it was renamed the Taurus in 2008. That short run and its age mean the auction pool is thin, high-mileage and cheap – too few sell to quote a model median, but across Ford's auction pool salvage cars land near $3,000 before fees, and a Five Hundred comes in well under that. These are budget lots that draw flippers and parts sellers more than restorers, and nearly all stay in the US, picked up locally or shipped in-country.
The one thing that decides a Five Hundred is the transmission. Every one runs the 3.0 Duratec V6 – a modest, durable motor – but it was paired with either an Aisin six-speed automatic or a ZF-built CVT, and the CVT is the known killer: it fails, replacements are scarce and a swap often costs more than the car. Confirm which gearbox a lot has before you bid, and treat a CVT car as parts unless the price is nothing. It's a front-wheel-drive unibody, so there's no frame to bend, but a front hit can push into the subframe and rad support – line the clean-title photos up against the damage code first. AWD versions add a power-transfer unit that leaks and whines when it's tired. If a car's a runner with a blown motor or a dead CVT, the non-repairable Five Hundred lots go cheap for swaps and parts.
