The E-150 is Ford's half-ton Econoline – the body-on-frame workhorse that moved fleets, contractors and conversion builds for decades. Live counts run smaller than the pickups, so it helps to pool the whole Ford E-Series for a real price read: over the last two years 41 salvage and repairable Econoline vans sold here, most between $800 and $4,450 before fees, with clean low-mileage cargo vans landing higher. Damage skews cosmetic – minor dents and scratches led at about 27%, and front-end hits were a smaller share than on the trucks – so a good number of these are driveable projects rather than write-offs. Parts are everywhere and the mechanicals are simple, which keeps rebuilders and small-business buyers on them; nearly all stay in the US, picked up locally or shipped in-country.
Two things really decide whether an E-150 pencils out. Start with the engine. The 5.4 Triton V8 is the one to inspect hard – early two-valve heads are famous for spitting spark plugs out of the block, and the later three-valve versions add cam-phaser rattle and plugs that shear off inside the head. The 4.6 V8 and the base 4.2 V6 are milder but usually tired after fleet miles. Then the frame and floor: these rust at the rear rails, cab corners and cargo floor, so probe anywhere a fleet let water sit. On conversion vans, pull back the carpet and wall panels – the added weight and sealed interiors hide floor rot and amateur wiring that never shows in a thumbnail. A clean-title Econoline with a straight frame is the one you want; a rusty cargo-van shell with a blown 5.4 still moves cheap as a running chassis or a parts donor.
