The 190, badged W201 in Mercedes' internal codes, was the company's first compact sedan — the car enthusiasts still call the "Baby Benz" — and it's rare enough at auction now that a sold-price average wouldn't mean much. It was also the first Mercedes with a multi-link independent rear suspension, a design so good the company carried it into nearly every model that followed. Value on what's left depends far more on rust and originality than on mileage, since these cars have been on the road for three decades or more. Cars from the final 1992 and 1993 model years share a documented issue with the era's biodegradable wiring insulation, which turns brittle and can flake with age, so check for flickering gauges or a sketchy ground before you bid on a late car.
