The GLE-Class picks up where the older M-Class left off — Mercedes renamed the nameplate in 2016 and gave it a full redesign a few years later, so the lineup here spans a facelifted older platform and the current-generation SUV. Very few trade in this pool in any given stretch, which makes it a watch-and-wait model rather than a high-turnover one; a straight, well-documented lot is worth waiting for. Most of what does sell stays in the US with rebuilders and shops rather than heading overseas.
Air suspension is standard on most GLE trims, and it's the single biggest thing to check — a car sitting low, or one flagged with a suspension fault, is looking at a real bill for bags and a compressor. The current generation added a mild-hybrid inline-six with a 48-volt system on several trims, along with plug-in hybrid variants on certain model years; either one means a high-voltage or 48-volt component sits somewhere in the car, so treat flood or a hard underbody hit with extra caution and don't assume you can price a battery pack from photos alone. The AMG GLE63 carries its own twin-turbo V8 and a locking-diff setup shared with other performance Mercedes SUVs — parts and labor scale up accordingly, so ask for service history before you bid on one. On any GLE, 4MATIC all-wheel drive adds a transfer case worth inspecting, especially on a lot with rear-end or underbody damage. If the drivetrain or cabin is too far gone, the non-repairable lots still carry value in the trim, glass and running gear.

Is a salvage GLE worth buying?
It can be, if the air suspension and drivetrain check out.
