Nissan sold this compact pickup under a few names — the boxy 720 through 1986, then the D21 "Hardbody" from 1986 to 1997 — and Nissan lists both together here since the newer Frontier took over after. Only a stray truck or two surfaces in a given stretch, too few to pin a sold price on, so read this pool as project and workhorse stock rather than daily-driver salvage. Most stay in the US with builders and off-road guys, picked up locally or trucked in-country.
Age is the real damage report on a truck this old, so start with the frame and the cab corners. Decades outdoors rust the frame rails, the rocker panels and the bed floor from the inside out, and a soft frame turns a cheap-looking truck into scrap. Under the hood, early trucks ran a carbureted Z24 four, while 1989-and-up Hardbodies switched to the fuel-injected KA24E — the more common find and the easier one to source parts for; a V6 (VG30i/VG30E) showed up on some higher trims. The KA24E is generally tough, but a rattly timing chain guide on a tired example is a known wear point worth listening for on cold start. Four-wheel-drive trucks before 1986 ran a solid front axle, while later 4x4 D21s moved to independent front suspension — check which one you're bidding on, since parts and geometry differ. Because these trucks share a lot of mechanical DNA with the early Frontier, drivetrain parts aren't as hard to find as the trim and glass. A straight, rust-free clean-title truck is worth chasing; a rusted shell still pencils out as a parts or engine donor.
