The first US-market RS 5, sold 2013 through 2015, runs a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 making 450 horsepower – no turbo, no supercharger, just displacement and revs, and a genuinely different driving character from everything that followed it. When the car returned for 2018, Audi swapped in a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6, an engine shared with Porsche's Panamera under the Volkswagen Group's parts-sharing arrangement, trading some of the old V8's drama for more low-end torque and better fuel economy. Quattro is standard on both generations, and the dual-clutch or automatic transmission on either one is generally durable if it's been serviced on schedule. Because the RS 5 is a two-door coupe, corner and door damage from tight parking lots turns up more than the frame-level hits you'd worry about on a bigger sedan. A shell with the engine already pulled is effectively a parts car, since sourcing either powerplant used isn't simple.
