Repairable, Salvage and Damaged Porsche 928 for Sale

The 928 was Porsche's front-engined flagship GT from 1978 to 1995, and it trades here as project stock, not daily-driver salvage. Only a car or two turns up in a given year, far too thin to support a median. Value tracks the engine variant and the body condition rather than a sale count — a straight S4 or GTS with a documented belt job holds real money, while a car that sat outside for years is worth its drivetrain and glass. Most stay in the US with restorers and collectors, picked up on a trailer or shipped in-country.

The V8 is the whole story on a 928. Every version — from the original 4.5-liter S through the 5.0 S4 and the 5.4 GTS — runs a timing belt on a fixed replacement schedule, and it's an interference engine, so a skipped belt bends valves and turns a runner into a parts car. Ask for belt and water-pump records before anything else; a car with no paperwork is a car you should price as if the belt's already overdue. The drivetrain runs through a rear-mounted transaxle connected by a torque tube, the same layout the 944 uses, so a hard rear hit can tag the transaxle as easily as the bodywork. Pop-up headlights and their motors are their own small inspection item, since decades of use wear the mechanism. Rust shows up less here than on the smaller 944, but early cars still need a look at the rear wheel arches and the battery tray. When a 928's body is too rough to save, the drivetrain and the torque tube assembly still find buyers on their own.
